Hiking isn’t just a great workout for you, it’s one of the best forms of therapy for your dog. The rhythmic trotting movement dogs do on the trail helps release “feel good” neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, similar to the “runner’s high” humans experience. These chemicals support emotional balance and can be especially helpful for dogs struggling with anxiety, restlessness, or frustration.

Beyond the chemistry, hiking offers powerful environmental enrichment. Every new scent, texture, and sound provides mental stimulation that’s impossible to replicate indoors or in a backyard. It satisfies your dog’s natural curiosity and hunting instincts while deepening your bond through shared adventure.

If you live in the city, you don’t need to drive hours to the mountains. Urban trails, waterfront paths, and even quiet parks with dirt or gravel sections can mimic the sensory experience of hiking. Aim for at least one outing a month, it will do wonders for your dog’s mind, body, and spirit (and yours too).
