As a dog trainer in Lower East Side, Manhattan, one of the most overlooked foundations I see in pet dogs is play. I recently worked with a Shih Tzu who had very little structured engagement with his owners, which made off-leash recall nearly impossible to build reliably.

This progression is what allows play to become a powerful tool for off-leash recall. When a dog learns that the handler is the source of fun and interaction, recall stops being a command and starts becoming a habit of engagement.
