As a dog trainer in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, I often see small breeds struggling with big emotions on leash. One recent case involved a Morkie with significant leash reactivity—barking, lunging, and escalating quickly whenever he saw other dogs.

In cases like this, the first priority is preventing rehearsal of the behavior. Every time the dog explodes on leash, that pattern gets stronger.

We introduced a head halter as a management tool to give immediate control and reduce his ability to lunge forward. This wasn’t used to “fix” the behavior directly, but to create structure and safety so he could no longer practice the aggressive response.

Once he was more manageable and less rehearsing the behavior, we began adding treats for calm engagement and attention back to the handler. This helped shift his focus and start building a new association with the presence of other dogs.

As a dog trainer in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, I focus on combining clear management with gradual behavior change. Tools like a head halter are not the solution on their own—they simply create the space needed to teach a better response.
