As a dog trainer in Hunters Point, Queens, I often work with anxious dogs who are completely overwhelmed by the outside world. One recent case involved a very nervous dog who wouldn’t even take treats outdoors. Her fear response was so high that it overrode her ability to think, process, or engage with food.

In this state, the dog wasn’t “disobedient”—she was simply reactive. The moment she saw other dogs, she would immediately become defensive and lunge as a way to create space and relieve pressure.

With dogs like this, the first goal isn’t obedience—it’s emotional regulation.

We focused on building a reliable way to redirect her attention back to us before she reached that point of escalation. Through structured engagement and timing, she began to check in more consistently, even in the presence of other dogs. Over time, she started to shift from automatic reactivity to awareness and choice.

Now, instead of immediately reacting, she can be guided back into focus and is learning to ignore other dogs rather than escalate toward them.

As a dog trainer in Hunters Point, Queens, this kind of progress is all about helping dogs move from survival mode into thinking mode—one controlled step at a time.
